ABSTRACT This paper brings up a discussion on different aspects of the chemical heterogereity of the hemoglobin molecule, specially those related to the glycosylated hemoglobins. The importance of these derivatives in the study of the diabetic patient, led the authors to carry out a comparative study of three procedures which have been devised to quantify them, in order to determine, in such a way, which is the best as a routine procedure.

The study was based upon two analytical methods of ion exchange chromatography: that recommended by Helena Laboratories, from Texas, USA and other in which th e ion exchanger was prepared in our laboratories. These methods were com pared with each other and with a colorimetric procedure based on the production of 5- hydroxymethylfurfural from the glycosylated derivative of hemoglobin and its reaction with thiobarbituric acid to give a derivative of certain spectrophotometric characteristics.

The authors present the results of these studies, along with their final recommendation about the choice of the method which according with their knowledge, could be the best as a routine procedure to quantify the glycosylated hemoglobins.
