For the student learning to fly helicopters in the 21st century, this book is one of the essential keys to flight. Helicopter pilots need to thoroughly understand the consequences of their actions, and base them upon sound technical knowledge. It examines the aerodynamic factors associated with rotor stalls, mast bumping, and wind effect, as well as maneuvering flight to include the hover, forward flight, flare, and autorotation. Helicopter design and components, performance, and weight and balance are covered, along with special techniques such as different types of takeoffs and landings, operating on sloping surfaces, sling operations, mountain flying, and helicopter icing.

Customer Book Reviews By far the best. By Hstoecklin hotmail. I am sure that anyone who reads the book from cover to cover afew times would have a very good understanding of the complexities involved in the world of rotorary-winged craft.
Thank you Walter. Thorough, excellent, well-planned Book By Citypol86 on May 23, This is an excellent book for the beginning pilot. If you can read and follow diagrams, you can understand the book. The text is clear and concise as are the diagrams. It gives you a full and thorough understanding of a very complex machine.
If you have a hard time understanding this book you may want to reconsider piloting a helicopter. It requires a basic understanding of physics and mathematics in order to comprehend the descriptions and explanations. With that said, this is a must-have book for all aspiring rotorheads! This book is a terrific technical manual regarding the physics behind rotary-winged flight.
It explains through diagrams and mathematical formulae both how and why helicopters fly. I highly recommend this book to anyone who really wants an understanding of rotary-winged flight, and to student helicopter pilots, as knowing the WHY is just as important as the HOW of flying.
Not a good first book A Customer on Oct 22, This is a good book for anyone wanting to become familiar with the in depth "nuts and bolts" of helicopter flight. It may be a little too complex for someone who is just tring to learn the basics of how a helicopter flies.
The book tends to assume that some of the scientific principles are generally understood by all readers. In my opinion, not a good first book. Principles of Helicopter Flight By Mike on Oct 10, I purchased this book as an optional book for a helicopter theory class, knowing nothing about helicopters going into the class.
Principles of Helicopter Flight delves deep into the theory of helicopter operation more than the FAA version, with chapters broken up well for each subject. It also follows a very logical, simple format so that people not familiar with basic physics concepts can pick up the book and learn everything they need to know. Overall, it is the perfect text for new pilots and veterans alike.
Engineers will have to use it only as reference, as it does not delve too deep into the equations of flight theory and aerodynamics. The explanations, diagrams and glossary words were key for me. After talking to several helicopter pilots I do feel that some things were left out of the book, but overall this book is excellent for getting familarized with basic helicopter principles.
A great work, but not for the beginners Moreover, there are quiz pages at the end of the each section. As a helicopter pilot,i assure you that you are going to learn much from this book. However,it is not for the beginners. The book requires basic understanding of numbers,i. After having some hours with helicopters, this book is going to improve your decision making process and make you understand precisely how a helo tries to fly.
Excellent text. Welling on Aug 30, This is an excellent text which covers all aspects in good depth to prepare you for helicopter flight training. Awesome By Richii Hype on Feb 09, This book is a one of a kind book, its contents are explained in the lowest level possible a five year old kid would be able to grasp the concept. The author of this book knows how to teach. I am enjoying every minute of this book, oh and mind you I hate reading.
Thank you. Clear and comprehensive By Steve on Oct 22, I fly radio controlled helicopters and wanted to understand the principles of flight plus some flight characteristics that baffled me.
The combination of clear explanations of flight behavior and excellent graphics make this book an excellent choice. The physics that underlie the performance of a helicopter are covered in just the right level of detail.
The reaction to various control inputs and the various mechanisms that provide those inputs are thoroughly explained and are accompanied by excellent drawings and graphs. No matter what size of helicopter you fly, this book will help you understand why a helicopter performs as it does.
Use this prior to learning to fly, for a better understanding By Krista Dee on Mar 11, I used this prior to Army Aviation School, and it provides a good solid foundation prior to getting down to the school. Could not be explained much easier! Very clearly expressed theories and explanations on just about everything. Fantastic read. To be honest, read it slow because the concepts are difficult for some to understand.
It took me a few hours to fully grasp a few things, but I highly recommend to understand in totality the concepts. It will greater your understanding of the rest of the book! Not a good first book By Chris Fleshman on May 02, This is a good book for anyone wanting to become familiar with the in depth "nuts and bolts" of helicopter flight.
It may be a little too complex for someone who is just tiring to learn the basics of how a helicopter flies. Cheap binding By Binbin on May 04, Excellent info but cheaply made, the pages started coming out on the first use. The binding is cheaply done. The book dives deep into the physics and science of rotorcraft flight.
Its very complete. A reader will need to have a basic understanding of physics as it relates to flight. The only negative to this text is that the illustrations and print quality are sub-par. ASA could really do more to make the text more presentable. Overall a very good book for increasing flight knowledge. Great Study Guide for Military flight test! After studying the material I scored a on the test. However, my age prevented me from making it through to the board as the Army G1 denied my age waiver thus ending my dreams of becoming a pilot in the military.
Both books are well woth the effort, pay special attention to the complex movements portion of the test as that is where you can really make a difference on your score. Good Luck! Good buy By Matt on Jan 09, Anyone looking at taking helicopter flight lessons or just wanting to further your knowledge, this is a great book. I used it as a student and even more as an instructor.
